Microsoft Power BI Desktop

Power BI Desktop is a useful tool for anyone who wants to view a report that has been shared with them as a “.pbix” file.  It is also useful for report authors who want to create a report or dashboard using interactive visuals.

Note: You do not have to provide your contact information to Microsoft when prompted.  The program will download without your entering that information, but you are welcome to provide the information if you want to sign up for the Power BI newsletter from Microsoft.

For report authors

In addition to Microsoft Power BI Desktop, the following report authoring tools are available.

Microsoft Report Builder

Report Builder is the tool of choice for constructing SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS) reports.  These reports get deployed to reportview.tennessee.edu.

Microsoft Mobile Report Publisher

Mobile Report Publisher is an alternative tool for building SSRS reports that are more mobile friendly and/or use more interactive graphics than traditional SSRS reports (but less than Power BI).  Note that Mobile Report Publisher can only handle datasets of approximately 200,000 rows or fewer.
